Chapter 2 – A Boy named Sora

"Ben! I can't move!" Kevin yelled.

"Hold on! I'm working on it," Swampfire grunted and used all his strength to shatter the ice imprisoning his right arm. He quickly started to melt the ice off of himself.

"It's as if someone knew Swampfire's biggest weakness," Ben thought.

Gwen ran towards them. Kevin shouted to her.

"Gwen! Watch out!"

Gwen radiated a sphere of magenta light above them. It not only scared the Heartless away for a few moments, but also revealed the person they had been looking for.

They could see a teenage boy about Ben's regular height and age dressed in a dark outfit accented with belts of bright yellow, deep red pockets and some touches of indigo blue and white. A very identifiable crown pendant hung on a thick, silver chain around his neck. His dirty blonde hair stuck out in thick, spiky strands almost obscuring his blue eyes. Even more noticeable was the weapon in his hands. He held an enormous key with a silver shaft and a golden handle. The teen seemed to hesitate when he gazed at Gwen, as if she reminded him of someone.

Swampfire finished breaking loose from the ice and charged at the unknown teen. Gwen raised hands to generate an energy shield, when a strange red robed imp materialized in front of her. The being had a peculiar heart shaped logo on the front of its chest.  She waved her hand, erecting the barrier in front of her just as the creature spat a fireball at her.

Swampfire turned his head to look at Gwen and felt something stab him in the stomach. He looked down at the key shaped weapon sticking through his body. His attacker struggled to pull the shaft of the weapon loose, but it stuck tight.

"Stop that! You're tickling me!" he snickered.

Several more of the red robed creatures appeared in front of Swampfire along other yellow-eyed monsters wearing bizarre armored helmets and more of the black shadow monsters. One of them appeared behind Gwen and used a twirling kick that knocked her to the ground.

"Help Gwen!" Kevin yelled.

"Excuse me," Swampfire pushed the teen away, leaving the weapon stuck in his abdomen. He felt a ball of flame strike his chest. He found it refreshing after getting the cold treatment.

"I can do that too!" The alien growled.

He threw a fireball at the red robed creature. It only seemed to be enjoying the fire as if it were feasting on a good meal.

"That doesn't look right," he said.

"What are you doing?!" The strange teen yelled at him. "You're making them stronger!"

"What?" Swampfire didn't quite understand. The alien then noticed the key shaped blade imbedded in his body vanished and rematerialized in the boy's hand. He quickly raised the weapon and shouted.

"Freeze!"

A beam of ice crystals shot out of the tip of the key shaped sword, striking the red robed Heartless. They froze and evaporated into the air releasing heart shaped lights into the night sky. Gwen understood what the stranger had done.

"Rock, paper, scissors, Ben!" she explained. "Don't fight fire with fire -."

"Fight fire with ice!" Swampfire understood.

Swampfire tapped the Omnitrix icon on his chest. A green light enveloped him for a few seconds, changing him into a different alien.

"Big Chill!" he hissed.

The stranger paused to see a hooded insect-like humanoid with creepy green eyes and blue and black skin. The alien wore what resembled a layered robe, but he pulled them away, showing that they were really wings. He floated into the air. The red Heartless spat balls of fire at Big Chill. The alien turned transparent, letting the flames pass right through him. He then blew a gust of cold gas from between his grinning teeth, freezing a several of the Heartless in place.

"Look out!" Big Chill warned.

He turned and floated through the teenager to attack a Heartless trying to sneak up behind him. The creature disintegrated it in a gust of ice.

"Be cool!" the alien told him. "I'm here to help."

The teenager still didn't look too convinced, but seemed to understand that the strange shape-shifting beast was on his side. The stranger attacked the nearest shadowy Heartless, while Big chill finished off all the fire breathing ones. The remaining Heartless escaped by vanishing into puffs of black smoke. Big Chill floated down and draped his wings over his body. Gwen got up, rubbing the area of her chest where she got kicked.

"Are you alright?" he asked her.

"I feel like I got hit by a illegal karate kick, but I'll be okay," she replied.

They stared at the teenager, who still glared at them suspiciously.

"It's okay. We don't want to hurt you," Gwen said to him.

The teen lowered his guard and pointed to Big Chill.

"I thought you were some kind of the Heartless, but I was wrong," he said.

"Heartless?" Big Chill rubbed his chin. "Is that what those yellow eyed monsters are called?"

"Yes."

There was a long pause.

"Is there something wrong?" he whispered to Gwen. "I feel like I got something on my face."

"Ben you've changed from fire breathing plant creature to an icy insect monster," she remained him. "I don't think he's ever seen anything like you."

"Oh."

At once, a green glow enveloped Big Chill and he turned back into Ben.

"Sorry. I usually look like this," Ben said. "Is that better?"

"Wow! You're not any older looking then I am!" the teen replied.

Ben smiled and put his hand out.

"Hi. My name is Ben Tennyson. Who are you?"

"I'm Sora," the teenager replied still keeping a wary distance. "Are you some kind of… magicians?"

"Magicians?" Gwen answered. "Not really. We just have special powers. My name is Gwen. I'm Ben's cousin. We want you to trust us."

"Well…" Sora stared at her for a moment before saying; "I've got no one else I can trust around here."

"Excuse me!" Kevin called out. "Are you guys forgetting something?"

"Kevin!" she exclaimed. They turned to see him still incased in ice.

"And I put Swampfire away," Ben started to use the Omnitrix. "I'll change back and thaw you out."

"I can do that," Sora offered. "Just stand back."

He stepped up to Kevin and pointed his weapon at him.

"Fire!" he said.

Flames shot out around Sora, melting the ice off of Kevin within seconds. What was left of the teen's wood-like appearance faded off his body.

"Sorry about that," Sora apologized.

"Nice use of multiple element discharge in that weird weapon of yours," Kevin rubbing the numbness from his arms.

"What, you mean my Keyblade?" Sora replied. "I can channel several simple spells through as if it were a wizard staff."

"Yeah. Magic," Kevin scoffed and blew on his hands to warm them.

"We don't practice magic. Or at least I don't anymore," Gwen said.

"But how do you do all those tricks?" Sora asked.

"Kevin and I were born with special powers. And Ben has the Omnitrix."

Ben pulled back his wrist to show Sora the watch.

"That looks like some type of magic talisman to me," Sora said.

"This device has the DNA of ten different aliens in it. I just turn the dial to pick the alien I want to change into and press down on the icon." Ben explained pointing to his wrist. When Ben looked at Sora and saw how befuddled he looked, he changed the explanation. "A wizard named Azmuth created it. He trapped the spirits of ten different monsters inside it and when I need to I can turn myself into one of them."

"Wow! That's pretty amazing!" Sora grinned.

"Yeah, we think its pretty amazing, too," Kevin said sarcastically.

"I'm never met a shape shifter before."

"Shape shifter? No ones ever called me that before," Ben said.

"You look like you've had a lot of training."

"Well," Ben's modesty started to dissipate. "I sort of learned as I've gone along."

"You too?" Sora admitted. "It's always been the same way for me."

"Excuse me," Kevin interrupted. "But, aren't we kind of getting off topic here?"

"And what topic should we be on?" Gwen glared at him a moment.

"Like what Sora has to do with these Heartless that were attacking us? It is why we came up here."

"Now you're suddenly interested in what's going on." She crossed her arms suspecting Kevin didn't like Sora getting so much attention.

"I'm just looking out for you."

"Sora said he has no one else to trust."

"So we simply trust him?"

"Kevin!"

"We've been burned before by people trying to be our friends in the past. Just because he can fight these things, doesn't mean he's friendly."

"Hey, I'm standing right here you know!" Sora snapped.

"Sorry, Sora. Kevin's got a point. We've been tricked by people trying to be our friends who were up to no good," Ben now stared at Kevin as if to remind the teenager of his own deceptions of the past. "Maybe you could tell us where you're from and what these Heartless are."

"Well, that could take a while," Sora said. "And I have to find my friends Riku and Kairi."

"Does either of them have silver hair?"

"Riku!" Sora perked up more then he did before. "You've seen Riku?!"

"Someone we know saw him. He's one of the reasons why we came up here."

"We got separated from each other when those strange knights showed up," Sora explained.

"Knights?" The other teens repeated at the same time.

"Did those knights have an looped emblem on their belts?" Gwen asked using her finger to trace a figure eight.

"Yeah! They were trying to capture us when we got separated."

"Forever Knights," Ben groaned.

"You know them?" Sora asked.

"It looks like we're on the same side after all," Gwen said. "Come on, let's get to the lake. Sora can tell us his story on the way there."

The group walked out of the woods and into the clearing. Ben and Gwen walked on either side of Sora while Kevin followed behind them. Ben asked Sora, "Where did your Keyblade go?"

"I put it away," Sora shrugged.

"He probably puts it in some kind of pocket dimension," Kevin figured.

"Actually, its on his back," Gwen corrected.

Ben looked at Sora's back, but saw nothing.

"You just can't see it," she added.

"How do you know?" Sora asked her.

"I felt the mana shift when you put it away." Gwen's eyes glowed a moment as she concentrated. It startled Sora, however he made no move to retrieve the Keyblade, figuring she wasn't trying to attack him. "I can see it now. It's cloaked within the energy field."

"Is it made of mana?" Ben asked.

Sora didn't understand much of what they said. He stopped and reached out his hand, willing the Keyblade into his existence. He then offered it to Gwen.

"Here, see it for yourself."

"Really?" she remarked. Gwen took the Keyblade in her hand. "It's lighter then I thought it would be."

"It looks like steel to me," Kevin said.

Kevin reached out to touch it, but Gwen pulled back.

"Kevin don't!" she warned.

The Keyblade disappeared from her grasp and materialized in Sora's hand.

"Sorry about that. Anyone else other than me can hold it for only a few moments," Sora explained.

Kevin and Gwen didn't hear his clarification, because they had started arguing.

"What did you do that for?" Kevin asked.

"I didn't want you to touch it because of what it could do to you," Gwen explained.

"I can touch things without absorbing them!"

"That Keyblade is different. It's like metal, but it also uses energy. It could -."

"You don't trust me!" he interrupted.

"I was protecting you!" she stated reversing rolls.

"Time out!" Ben cut in. "Can we focus on what were doing? We have to find Sora's friends. The Forever Knights might have captured them by now."

"No problem," Kevin stalked away towards the highway. Ben and Gwen started to follow him, but Sora hung back a moment looking at the forest with his Keyblade gripped in a defensive stands.

"What is it, Sora?" Gwen asked.

"I thought I felt something," he said.

"A Forever Knight? Or a Heartless?"

"It felt like a Heartless. I think it's gone now."

"Let's catch up to Kevin," she said. "I have to apologize to him."

"You have to apologize?" he scratched his head. "Didn't he start it?"

"Maybe. But, whether of not it's my fault, it will make me feel better."

Kevin turned to look back at Ben, Gwen, and Sora.

"I could have warned you Kevin." He heard a voice say. "They've already found someone to replace for you."

Kevin snarled. He felt someone put his hand on his shoulder.

"They want to walk in the light Sora gives off," she whispered. "You can't compare to that."

He said nothing else. He felt extremely cold and his chest tightened. He ignored both symptoms, pulled away from her grasp and kept walking to his car. When he reached the vehicle he popped the truck, took out a flashlight and used it to look at the damage on the car's fender.

"I'm sorry about that," Sora said.

Kevin looked down at the teen.

"It's going to cost some money to fix," he complained.

"I've got some munny on me. You can have it." Sora went into his pocket and pulled out several-rainbow colored diamond shaped crystals. He put them on the hood of the car. Kevin picked one up.

"Are you serious?" Kevin asked.

"It's all I've got," Sora said.

"Come on. You sit in that back with me." Ben put his hand on Sora's shoulder and told him. Kevin gathered up the munny and tossed it in the trunk with the flashlight. He felt Gwen following him.

"What is it? Are you going to tell me I should give him back his "money," too?" He burst out.

Gwen opened her mouth to say something, but quickly gave up and went to sit in the front. Kevin took a rag from the trunk. He quickly cleaned off the floor mat of as much of the smoothie mess as he could, before climbing into the driver's seat and gunned the car down the road.

***

Deep in the woods beside the lake, the Forever Knights were into their second night of stalking the Wielders of the Keyblades. Their success had not been too productive.

Connor kneeled over one of his men. The Forever Knight had been knocked unconscious by one of the Keyblade Masters they had been tracking. Driscoll stood up next to Connor as he worked to wake the man up.

"The prey is becoming more of the predator as time passes," Driscoll commented.

"The silver haired knight is a ruthless fighter," Connor added. "He alone could likely slay the dragon we seek. But we need more than the one to wage a successful war against all the beasts."

"Your men seem to be so inadequate to deal with one knight. It's a wonder you ever captured that dragon in the first place."

"You like spouting insults to our clan Driscoll. But, I see you have not brought any better results."

"When one needs to catch prey, one only needs to acquire the proper bait."

Driscoll signaled with his hand. His ninja came out from the shadows dragging a teenage girl in front of him. The girl wore a traveling outfit of pink and white with lavender sneakers and a small satchel on her hip. Her hair was a shade of red like mahogany or cherry wood and her eyes were a deep shade of blue. The ninja had a cord tied tightly around her upper arms, pinning her arms down. Kairi showed no fear to any of them. She scowled at Driscoll and Connor.

"It seems I'm the one doing you all the favors, Connor," Driscoll said.

"I won't let you use me to capture my friends!" Kairi shouted at him.

"Ah, but you are the damsel my dear child. The knights will always save the princess."

Driscoll took hold of Kairi by her chin to make her look at him. She continued glaring at him in anger. He then reached into her satchel and took out Kairi's thalassa shell good luck charm.

"Here's your fishing lure," he offered it to Connor. "I'd advise you to put her in a secure place."

A dozen more Forever Knights walked up to Connor. He signaled to two of his men to help remove the injured knight while another two took Kairi in custody. Just as they made the exchange, a portal of darkness opened. Kairi's fearlessness faded for a moment when a cloaked woman stepped out. All the bad memories of being taken away by Xehanort came to her mind.

"Ben, Gwen, and Kevin are heading for the lake. Sora is with them," the witch announced. "This is your chance to capture the Keyblade Master."

"Excellent work my dear," Driscoll commended her.

The witch paused to stare at Kairi.

"Does the little princess miss her knight with the shiny Keyblade?" she mocked her in a very pouty sounding voice.

"I'm a knight too!" Kairi reminded her. "I wield a Keyblade just like my friends do. Once I'm free, you'll see how I'm no damsel."

The witch laughed at her. She was going to say something else discouraging to her, when she felt like someone was watching her. She turned to stare into the woods. She glimpsed a silver haired figure hiding behind a tree.

"One of her knights is close by!" she stated.

It took Kairi a few moments before she understood what the witch meant.

"Riku! Run away!" Kairi shouted.

They heard someone dashing away into the deeper woods. Several Forever Knights ran into the tree line to pursue Riku. This time, the Forever Ninja waited beside Driscoll for orders.

"Go to the lake," Driscoll told his servant, "and wait for Tennyson to bring the Keyblade Master."

"I have Heartless waiting to ambush them when they arrive," the witch informed Driscoll. "This time, Sora will not escape."

"Well, well, well. You guys are pretty good at this," someone new said.

Kairi gasped when she recognized the voice. Pete walked out from among the trees. A broad grin spread on his ugly bulldog face as he continued talking.

"And here I come lookin' for the best and darkest in this world and they're already a step ahead of me."

"You must pardon us for not knowing you," Driscoll addressed him.

"Name's Pete," he explained pointing his thumb at his chest. "I'm the point man for a lady named Maleficent. We're used to recruitin' villains from other worlds to help us, but you guys are already in the game."

"And the person you work for knows about our little project?"

"The Heartless are our allies and have been for quite a while. But this world is a brand spanking new one for them."

"It's not as new a world for them as it is for the Keyblade Knights," the witch said.

"Hee! Hee! Hee!" Pete chuckled. "We've been fightin' that Keyblade brat Sora for quite a while. Anyone who wants to get rid of him and his pals is a friend of ours."

The witch removed her hood. He could see the young woman had icy white hair and a cold smile to match. Pete gulped and took a step back, intimidated by her fierce gaze.

"Then watch us deal with those troublemakers for you," Charmcaster informed him," and see what happens to those who claim protect in this world."

"Oh! Those three other kids you're talkin' about?" Pete guessed. "I figure you got plans for them?"

"Elimination," she said. "But there is one who I am turning against the other two."

"Well if I might make suggestion?" Pete became bold enough to step closer and whispered. "Ever thought about turnin' them into Heartless?"

Charmcaster laughed.

"Pete, I like you already."
This chapter had one of those last minute decisions I kept debating with myself. I feared putting any Disney characters in the story since this is a non Disney world. However, i was also not too comfortable with the idea of Driscoll and Charmcaster having every bit of information about Heartless and the dark realm handed to them by a "magic" spell.

So enter Pete for some a bit of comedy relief. The Ben 10 Saga is know for humor as well as action.

As for when in the KH Saga this takes place in, it's somewhere between the second and yet to be done third game. I still see Maleficent and Pete as being main villains up to controlling either the Heartless or many even Unbirths?

I can't wait for Noruma to make the game, can I? ;)
